Joe Wicks on how to get motivated

Joe Wicks talks about his involvement in Soccer Aid and shares some fitness motivation tips

by Angela Sara West

When we went into lockdown, Surrey local and health & fitness guru Joe Wicks was every parent’s saviour, beaming virtual PE lessons into our living rooms. He’s back this weekend for ITV’s Soccer Aid. And footie fan Joe can’t wait to be on the pitch, as he tells Angela Sara West exclusively for Time & Leisure.

“It’s such a fantastic event and raises so much money for UNICEF, so I’m very proud to be a part of it again this year,” says Joe. “It’s going to have some new faces this year, and some proper England football legends… I’m very excited to play!”

This year, Soccer Aid will be presented behind-closed-doors by Dermot O’Leary and Kirsty Gallacher. The star-studded, crowd-free, charity match kicks off the new football season in style, with the likes of Michael Owen, Lee Mack, Olly Murs, Kelly Smith MBE, Ore Oduba, Roman Kemp, Jason Mansfield, David James, Liane Sanderson, Iain Stirling, Joel Dommett, Marvin Humes, Paddy McGuinness, Danny Jones and Mark Wright, managed by Harry Redknapp, Bryan Robson, Wayne Rooney, Sam Allerdyce or Bradley Walsh.

During lockdown, Joe’s daily workouts didn’t just get the kids involved and motivated millions around the world to get up off their sofas to join his sessions. If you’ve lost some motivation since, Joe has these tips:

  • Visit The Body Coach on YouTube for loads of workouts, from beginner and low-impact to more advanced. You can do these great workouts with no equipment in your tiny little living room. If you’re after something else, try yoga or pilates… there’s so much content online that’s free!
  • Choose a workout, press play, just do something, even if it’s 10 or 20 minutes. You’re going to feel better, more energised, and your motivation will be waiting for you right there at the end when you’ve finished that workout!
  • Focus on getting a good night’s sleep and having some good food in your body, because without good sleep and nutrition you’ll be tired, sluggish and have no motivation to train. So, it’s a case of getting your food, fitness and sleep sorted, taking them all seriously, and getting them into your life as best you can.
