Susan Jackson Cousin – Business Coach

Susan Jackson Cousin gives us the lowdown on business coaching and what makes her company stand out

Tell us a bit about your business

I work as a business coach but, as a term, this is it not always very well understood as business coaching is a relatively new but growing concept. A good way to describe it is that I do for Business Owners what sports coaches do for athletes. I work with them to help them grow and shape their business by motivating, questioning, encouraging and sharing knowledge and experience. I act as a guide, a sounding board, a critical friend and an educator, offering a mixture of support and challenge depending on the situation and circumstance.

What do you enjoy most about what you do?

Without hesitation, it is seeing others succeed and achieve what they want, not just in their business but for them as individuals and their families. Success is judged by the individual and their goals and can take many forms: financial reward, having more time, creating employment or doing charitable work. However, for many, owing a successful business that can work independently of them is the enabler to them achieving their goals and having choice in their lives. Helping people to see and deliver that is hugely rewarding to me.

How did you get into your chosen career and why?

As a qualified accountant, I have always been comfortable with numbers and enjoyed business. In my career, I have seen many sides of different coins to understand the benefits of planning and of good teams and teamwork to achieve goals. It was the thought of using and sharing my skills and experience to help business owners become successful both professionally and personally than led me to business coaching.

What do your clients value most about your services?

That is a difficult one to answer as people invest in business coaching for various reasons be it support, accountability, technical knowledge, having the sounding board and critical friend or the discipline and focus that coaching brings.

However, I would say that the things that are most commonly valued is that I encourage people to think bigger, to believe in themselves, be determined and focus on what they want. They like the fact that, while I work within a broad framework, my work is tailored to them, focused with them and together we make their goals achievable.

Is there a secret to your success?

I am not one for secrets – I am a bit of an open book.  My success come from the  relationships I have with my clients.  I take the fact that people let me into their lives and share their thoughts and challenges with me very seriously.   I look on my coaching as a shared commitment to my clients’ goals and I think this sense of wanting the best for them comes across in everything I do.
