Pub terraces and gardens for autumn

Who says a pint al fresco is just for summer?

Tier 2 restrictions have been implemented in London. There’s no mixing between households inside but you can still meet – up to 6 – in the open air. Here’s some pub terraces and gardens we love… Do phone venues in advance for the latest…

The White Hart, Barnes (pictured above)

Leafy Barnes is spoilt with its riverside setting and The White Hart takes advantage of the great views of the Thames from its terrace, which are particularly lovely at sunset.

The Avalon, Clapham South

The Avalon is blessed with an abundance of outside areas. There’s a terrace with heaters plus a garden, complete with a lounge area, booths and an al fresco bar.

The Old Ship, Hammersmith

With a gorgeous terrace overlooking the Thames, this is a fab spot for a pin on an autumn evening. There a great menu too, with food served from brunch until dinner.

The Anglers, Teddington

Another riverside gem, you’ll find the Anglers next to Teddington Lock and a fine pit stop on a walk from Kingston to Richmond: just hop over the footbridge. The garden is huge, and a popular place for families.

The Red Lion – Shepperton

Chill out on the riverside terrace at the Red Lion, watching the boats bob up and down on this gorgeous stretch of the Thames. We’re bagsying the sofa area and chilling with a glass of vino and one of the top burgers.

Wych Elm, Kingston

The ‘secret’ garden tucked away in this residential street in North Kingston is a special place indeed. There’s no heaters or shelter but you can book a table outside in advance – just bring a blanket – then relax with a well-kept pint.

The Canbury Arms, Kingston

The Canbury is a grand old pub with a recent makeover and offers fab gastropub dishes. Outside you’ll find a small terrace with patio heaters, plus a smattering of benches at the front and side of the pub.

You’d be forgiven for thinking you’re in the heart of the country in this village pub on Wimbledon Common. After stretching your legs around the green, head here for a pie and a pint in the garden. Your four-legged friends will love it too with the chance to be awarded ‘dog of the day’.
