Ultimate Guide To The Best Pubs in Epsom

Once a year, thousands of racegoers descend onto the Surrey town of Epsom which hosts one of the greatest flat horse races in the world – The Epsom Derby. With so many visitors looking for decent pubs, where would locals head to for a drink and bite to eat?

1

The Rubbing House

Perhaps one of the most famous pubs in Epsom, The Rubbing House’s unique position means that it is situated right on the racecourse itself – and perhaps the only pub in the world to do so. It’s also just a stone’s throw from the winning post. The pub’s panoramic views of the racecourse are what make its location so special and on race days you can assess the quality of the horses as they pass by just a few yards away, as well as watch the action unfold from the historic balcony. The Rubbing House is a popular pub which has a large wine selection and plenty of beers and ales on tap. It also caters for large parties, too, and is known for its traditional pub grub including roast dinners and fish and chips.

2

The Marquis of Granby

If you’re looking for traditional pubs in Epsom with tons of character, this is a quirky destination. The Marquis of Granby is an 18th Century red brick building complete with wood-panelling, exposed beams and period features, as well as large front and back gardens. With craft beers and ales and a wide choice of wine, cocktails and gins – including Tarquin’s Raspberry & Rhubarb gin and Tanqueray Flor de Sevilla gin – there is plenty to whet your appetite. And with food served all day, too, the Marquis is a good choice location-wise being so close to Epsom Station and the marketplace.

The Derby Arms

The Derby Arms can be found in the valley of Epsom Downs, opposite the world-famous Queen Stand and racecourse. Its grassy banks outside and beer garden provide a great vantage point to enjoy the racing festivities, as well as the summer weather. Inside, there is an extensive menu including sharing platters, sourdough pizza, and homemade burgers, as well as stylish and contemporary interiors. The pub itself occupies a large space, so it never feels overcrowded. Particular favourite spots are the little alcove window seats, which are perfect when the weather turns chilly and you want to spend an evening with good conversation and a bottle or two.

4

Caballo Lounge

A cross between an eccentric granny’s living room and a cosy cafe, The Caballo Lounge on Epsom’s High Street doesn’t sound like a typical drinker’s paradise, but when you see the drinks menu from cocktails and a wide choice of wines and beers, it’s a good spot to lounge in and watch the world go by. When the sun is shining, The Caballo’s hidden gem is a large rooftop terrace, where you can enjoy all-day dining, including tasty tapas dishes such as buttermilk fried chicken and five spiced pulled pork.

5

Be At One

Located in Epsom Square and where the old Slug and Lettuce used to be, Be At One’s famous 2 for 1 happy hour on any of their cocktails are drawing in the crowds. With a trendy vibe and smattering of bright blues, pinks and mauves from the smartie-coloured bar stools and leather seats, there’s plenty of space for drinkers to kick back and make their way through the epic list of cocktails. Watch, too, the bartenders’ prowess as they shake their mixers and remember the vast orders being shouted at them over classic pop tunes.
