Wimbledon Community comes together to provide 5000 meals for NHS

Old Wimbledonians Association appeal to community for donations as it helps deliver over 5000 meals to NHS frontline workers

The national interest in what has being going on down at the Old Wimbledonians Association clubhouse in Raynes Park has been growing remarkably this week since its kitchen and those of its partners, the Rose and Crown, The Alexandra, Vallebona, Zaika Restaurant (Teddington) and Princess of India, have together produced and delivered over 5000 meals for NHS frontline staff since 6 April 2020.

Stephen Hammond, MP for Wimbledon, lent his support by a socially distanced visit last weekend, meeting volunteers, including resident chef Richard Brown, who said “When the virus crisis hit at the end of March we had a freezer full of food and I wondered if we could turn it into meals for local vulnerable people,”

That thought was shared with Greg Martis of the Old Wimbledonians Association Committee who galvanised support from the Association’s members.  Using Association members’ community links, together with partner organisations, the initiative has been named Project ‘Doing a Bit’.

Greg Martis said “the support from the local community has been truly humbling.  The Dons Local Action group provide us with a lot of our ingredients, and we work closely with them to deliver the meals.  We have had donations coming in from all corners, but also a rota to deliver homemade cakes has been set up by the parents of our youth rugby players, the Old Wimbledonian Warriors, and the parents of pupils at Donhead School. The list of people to thank is very long indeed!”
