Outdoor workout – 5 fun ways
Outdoor workout – 5 fun ways
From open water swimming and cycling to paddleboarding and polo, here’s the most fun ways to get fit in southwest London and Surrey
1
MAKE FOR THE WATER
Whether you fancy a brisk swim or a leisurely kayak, we have spots all over Surrey and south west London. Heated Hampton Pool is open year-round for a swim. Or try open water swimming in the vast lake at Shepperton – you can book a coach if you’re new to open water swimming. You can also rent kayaks there. Try your hand at stand-up paddleboard with SUP4 in Kingston, which offers coaching and group sessions. Or join The Lensbury Club, where you can easily take to the Thames from its riverside location for various water-based activities.
2
IN THE SADDLE
We have many gorgeous local spots for a hack, from Richmond Park to Wimbledon Common. Book a lesson at Stag Lodge to advance your skill level whether beginner or pro. Or try Barnfield Riding School – lessons and hacks here will help support its work offering subsidised opportunities as a centre for Riding for the Disabled. Perhaps try your hand at polo. Ham Polo Club offers lessons to both members and non-members and the sport is not only a real workout but great fun too, particularly in the summer sun.

PERFECT YOUR SERVE
Tennis is a top way to get fresh air and a great outdoor workout. Head to the clubspark.lta.org.uk website for all local courts and courses. Wimbledon Park, and Canbury Gardens in Kingston offer courts to hire. Want to up your game? There are courses to suit all levels at Battersea Park Millennium Arena.

PARK LIFE
Sign up for one of the many training sessions in the parks. Join a group for motivation or get a personal instructor for a workout to suit you. Bear Grylls’ Be Military Fit programme will get you in your best shape yet. They take place in various outdoor locations, including Tooting Bec, Richmond Park and Clapham Common.
5
ON YOUR BIKE
If your bicycle has been tucked away in the shed all winter, take it to a local shop to be checked over. Halfords offers free bike checks. Then choose your route – off road in Richmond Park: head around the perimeter on the Tamsin Trail – or along the miles of riverside tracks – fabulous stretches include Kingston to Richmond.
