Barnes Music Festival

The popular festival will this year celebrate Holst, with his mystical opera Savitri combining Western and Indian music and dance. There will also be Shakespeare inspired events and festival patron Gyles Brandreth will also offer his theatrical and musical anecdotes. The search will be on for next year’s Barnes Young Musician of the Year, too. 17 – 30 May. More info.

CYCLE THROUGH KEW

From May 21 and through summer, Kew Gardens has launched cycle evenings so you can explore the park on two wheels. Bring a picnic or stop for a treat at one of the pop-up food stands. Check website for dates. More info.

HISTORY & MYSTERY IN KINGSTON

The curious and incredible Dorich House is reopening this month from 20 May. The work of artist Dora Gordine, the 1930s house is a hidden gem and plays host to some great exhibitions. Book a free visit in advance. More info.

HEAD TO THE BEACH

Backyard Cinema is channeling some LA and Miami Beach vibes as it reopens with tonnes of exported sand and all the fabulous theming we’ve come to expect from this Wandsworth favourite. Kick back with a cocktail and watch old classics or a new release. More info.

ART IN THE AGE OF NOW

The impressive Victorian space of Fulham Town Hall will be taken over by a range of artists in May, with contemporary art, music, talks and performance art, taking place across the entire building. 20 May – 6 June. More info.

ANITA KLEIN: TOGETHER

Marking the first exhibition following the reopening of Watts Contemporary Gallery in Surrey, Together offers more than 60 works by Anita Klein, spanning painting, prints and works on paper. The exhibition explores the artist’s response to the last year and the joy of coming together again with family and friends. 1 May – 4 July. More info.

HEAD TO THE COAST, VIA TURNER

An exhibition of J.M.W. Turner’s original maritime watercolours and prints is to open in his former home in Twickenham. Turner’s English Coasts focuses on the artist’s engagement with English marine and coastal subjects at a key time in his career when he was living at Sandycombe Lodge; the house he designed and lived in between 1813-26. INTERACTIVE SHAKESPEARE

An interactive theatrical experience inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream is heading to the grounds of Fulham Palace. Titania’s Dream, from Kilburn Live, will introduce young audiences to Shakespeare in a fun way while making the most of the outdoors. 20 May – 6 June. More info.

CULTURAL REFORESTING

Orleans House Gallery in Twickenham is embarking on a project to look at how we can help repair our damaged relationship with nature. Artists in residence will set up studios in the gallery and in the grounds. 18 May – 14 November. More info.

GREEN MEET IN FULHAM

Seasonal food, children’s activities and a green market are on offer at Fulham Palace’s eco event. Also hear about the palace’s biodiversity and climate change action plan. 2 May. More info.
