Inch Perfect

Couldn’t stick to the diet? Didn’t get to the gym as often as you planned? If you didn’t manage to hit your weight-loss goals and you’re fretting about those lumps, bumps and love handles, help may well be at hand with a whole arsenal of non-surgical cosmetic body sculpting and contouring treatments at your fingertips.

It's all about the collagen
Most treatments claiming to tighten and firm work by kick-starting the production of collagen in your body. Collagen is what helps to make your complexion firm and youthful. Procedures can cause microscopic (and non visible) ‘injuries’ in the collagen layer, which prompt the body to switch into healing mode where it produces more collagen.

Freeze the fat
CoolSculpting is one of the most advanced contouring treatments available and works by freezing the fat cells and destroying them so the area treated also shrinks in size. Particularly good for arms and flanks, CoolSculpting can be used to treat any area of pinchable fat around the body. Areas treated can have a 25 to 35 per cent reduction in size, but results vary from client to client. The results are designed to last as the process destroys the fat cells, which do not regrow.

Final results are seen three months after treatment so book in advance of a holiday or big event. Clients often require just one treatment and the cost varies depending on how many CoolSculpting applicators are used on the area (around two to six for an average sized tummy seems to be the norm). Skin feels cold for around the first five minutes of the treatment and there can be a dull ache during this time but any discomfort is generally mild.

Experts advise that under-treating the areas by using fewer CoolSculpting applicators on the area will produce less dramatic contouring results. The Glasshouse Clinic offers CoolSculpting in both of its clinics in Clapham and Wimbledon.

Smooth and simple
Cellulite treatments have evolved over the last decade and while dry brushing two to three times a week is still an economical everyday routine to help improve your skin health, technology can give much-needed help when it comes to diminishing those dimples.

Endermologie, or palpate rolling, works by kneading, manually or by machine, the skin and subcutaneous tissue in such a way that the stimulated fibroblasts secrete collagen and elastin giving an improved look and tone to the skin. Around 15 sessions are required for visible results, spaced two to three times a week.

Endermologie LPG has created Lipomassage and its new CELLU M6 Alliance employs a skin suit to protect the skin during rolling. The Lipomassage is available at Chelsea’s KX Spa.

A variety of local salons also offer palpate massages where a therapist manually massages the body and problem areas.

Anti-cellulite detox wraps, meanwhile, are a quick, easy and reasonably priced way to give your skin a much-needed buff and glow, with a good exfoliation key to soft, shiny beach-ready skin.

Tight and light
High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), also known as Ultrasound Therapy, is another non-invasive technology, which targets skin tightening, lifting and fat reduction via the application of energy to the underlying tissue.

The ultrasound energy causes cellular friction, which causes constriction and thus a tightening effect is seen, often immediately. The process activates the body’s natural ability to produce new collagen. The number of sessions required for visible fat reduction varies depending on each client.

Total Body Care in Clapham offers HIFU by Levura, which can be used to tighten skin and eliminate fat around the neck and body, including the upper arms, back, abdomen, hip and thighs. “The use of ultrasound energy results in immediate contraction – providing a tightening effect – and stimulation of new collagen and elastin as part of the healing process,” explains Dr Fayaz Hasham, medical director at Total Body Care Clinics.

There is usually no downtime, patients can feel a tingling sensation, and can feel some heat on occasion, but tightening effects are often seen after one treatment depending on the area. The fat loss can be permanent as long as you maintain a good diet and lifestyle.

Tantouring (3D/4D Tanning)
This is a real cheat measure but tantouring – contouring but with fake tan – is a great way to quickly and painlessly get that bikini body you’ve always wanted.

There are tantouring home kits now available as well as YouTube tutorials showing you how to add definition to your flabby bits. Or leave it to the professionals and head to a local salon, where therapists can add definition with a contoured spray tan and help you achieve beach-ready perfection.
