New Season Hair Trends

As we move into a new season, celebrity hairstylist Denise McAdam shares her tips on the trends you need to try now

The power of a great hair cut is truly amazing. Add colour and the result is magical. Winter is the perfect time to embrace a new look. As the nights get longer, opt for softer lighter woody tones of maple, pear and walnut giving a sense of nobility and sensuality to every strand: a look which the Duchess of Cambridge has recently embraced. Meanwhile, strong polished haircuts with a soft edge, swag fringes with their own personality, perfectly defined curls and curvaceous waves are bang on trend. Try City Slick styled hair with a perfect side parting and smoothed across to a low chignon held in place using Goldwell Kerasilk Control Protective Oil.

Hair expert Gina Conway says it is a time to refresh and renew, adding in some caramel and chestnut tones, using techniques such as micro lights. Gina’s styling reflects the ‘doneundone’ look, embracing different stages of your blow dry, with day one of the blow dry just as exciting as day two. Day 1: Gina loves to finish the blow dry with Aveda Hand Relief Cream, an old trick, one I have used on many a fashion show. It smooths the cuticle without weighing the hair down. Soft hands too! Day 2: the undone bigger look, spritz some Aveda Rinseless Refresh into the hair roots. Blast with a hairdryer or natural dry, creating texture not rebellion.

Terry, creative director at Hair Organics, looks for natural ingredients to work with that are least harmful to hair and the environment. His team’s preferred colour range is Daniel Field Organic & Mineral colour system, helping you to achieve soft winter caramel and honey tones. When it comes to ‘clean & green’ products, Daniel Field is a pioneer and Terry shares this passion to hair care. For winter styling, try Hair Organics Hero Blow Dry Cream, which wraps itself around each hair fibre like a film, keeping the cuticle smooth, shiny, and frizz free. It’s also No1 in my session bag and has just won best hair product at the 2019 Shortlist Beauty Awards!

The experts at Esente Hair Salon in Wimbledon advise: “It’s that time of year when we need to revive our hair from the aftermath of summer! Often hair is dryer and lighter by now and needs to be refreshed. Ammonia-free gloss colours are a great way to add tone and shine to your hair for winter. Many people think of “all over colour” as one solid colour but with new techniques and creativity this need not be the case. We can add multi tones using two to three colours (or more!) applied free hand to the hair to give the illusion of natural lights in your hair in different shades that compliment you.”

They add that rich, warmer tones are trending now for the winter months including coppers, reds and mahogany browns, but choosing the right tones for your skin is key: “Colours can be combined to get your perfect match.”

Colour Watch

Chris Williams, international colour director at Rush Hair, is keeping colours rich with blackberry colours infused with pink and red tones, using a halo technique, which works well with this beautiful rich shade. A strong creative look, with colour, vibrancy, reflection and giving incredible shine. Kane at Rush in Surbiton introduced me to my new favourite after-colour treatment, which is L’Oréal Smartbond, a new generation of bond strengthening systems, fantastic for aftercolour protection.

Hare & Bone in Esher, a Sam Burnett salon, creates some of the hottest fashion catwalk trends. It notes that this season, blondes are brighter with warmer strawberry tones whilst browns are cooler with metallic bronze tones. A new delicate technique called Babylights, subtle dimensional hair colouring, can be added to any colour and any length plus Babylights are low maintenance.

Inside Out

My secret to beautiful shiny healthy hair is a well-balanced diet but sometimes your hair just needs extra support. I am a very strong believer in supplements and my firm favourite for health hair is Imedeen, which Joanna Lumley introduced me to in the early 80s. You should add a supplement to your daily routine with all the necessary vitamins to support your hair from inside out, especially in times of stress or post-natal.

Meanwhile, Viviscal Pro Advanced Hair Health, which is only available at selected salons, strengthens the hair from insideout and is packed with protein, biotin and vitamin C. It promotes thicker healthier hair growth, dealing especially with menopause, endometriosis, postpartum or any hair thinning issues. For any hair concerns make an appointment with Sean Hanna Salons, which are Viviscal Pro appointed salons.

Party Tricks

As we head towards Christmas, don’t get trapped in your same old routine, take it up a gear: fall head over heels for bejewelled hair. Hair jewellery is the must-have accessory this winter, a trend that is going to become increasingly hot this season. It all started with the return of the hairband. I adore the latest launch from Australian brand Kela which is now available in the UK. Sam Burnett says the new BaByliss 9000 cordless hair straightener is a hero styling tool for styling on the go. It is lightweight and offers you the ultimate straightening experience and it can curl too!
