Battersea  I    Approx 1,000 pupils    I    10-18 years

At Emanuel School, it is our vision that pupils are happy, confident and kind, demonstrating high aspirations in all that they do.

As the educational landscape – and indeed, our world – changes at an unprecedented pace, our pupils are well-equipped to take on challenges with confidence while looking out for one another.

This was no more apparent than during the Covid-19 pandemic, with every aspect of school life seamlessly transferred to a virtual learning experience. Pupils maintained full timetables, meeting face-to-face with their teacher and class online, and maintained crucial social connections with their form groups and houses. Co-curricular opportunities were delivered through sporting, musical, artistic and dramatic challenges, while clubs and societies met to debate theological concepts, visit virtual theatres and go head-to-head in maths competitions.

“Emanuel is clearly on the up and there is a tangible buzz about the place… Thanks to superb leadership, dedicated staff and animated pupils, Emanuel [is] starting to fire on all cylinders.”

Good Schools Guide

Our support for the local community has grown exponentially. Through the school’s Battersea Rise Trust (our social mobility vehicle), we delivered food, books and digital devices to our more vulnerable neighbours during the pandemic. This was in addition to our regular outreach and partnership activities, such as Primary Ambitions – our flagship outreach programme which sees Lower Sixth students teaching and mentoring local Year 6 pupils on a weekly basis.

Academic results at Emanuel are high and climbing. The most recent public exam results (2019) saw 48.5% A* and A grades at A level, while 72% of pupils achieved A*-7 at GCSE. Pupils study an extraordinary breadth of subjects, including Ethos and Computing, Design & Robotics for younger pupils and creative subjects such as Drama & Theatre Studies, Photography and Film Studies available at A level. Almost all Sixth Form students pursue the Extended Project Qualification, where students are taught transferable study and research skills to complete a project entirely within their own area of interest.

Emanuel provides a boarding-school standard of co-curricular activities within a day school timetable. Our sports programme, delivered on and off-site using exceptional facilities, involves opportunities for performance, development and engagement in sports from rugby to rowing, and hockey to cross country. Thespians have a year-round programme of productions for all year groups, with older students taking on Edinburgh Fringe every other year. Musicians flourish in classical ensembles, develop digital music and DJ skills and take the spotlight at our annual Rock & Pop concert. Artists find inspiration in specialist painting, print and ceramics studios, and are given the opportunity to annually exhibit their work at a prestigious Chelsea gallery. Other interests can be explored within 60 clubs and societies, including Media Club (hosted in our exceptional film studio), Junior Equality Club and Debating Club.

Pupils are expertly guided in their higher education and career aspirations. Specialist staff advise and support applications to institutions including Oxbridge, RADA and colleges in the USA, while the careers department opens pathways to work experience and internships in top UK industries. Our alumni body includes artists and award-winning novelists, actors and screenwriters for the BBC and Netflix, singer-songwriters, medics, lawyers and entrepreneurs, including the founder of the World Wide Web.

It is important to us that bright and talented pupils can unlock the never-ending potential available at Emanuel School. With this in mind, we are committed to offering free places to such children who would not otherwise be able to attend. It is our aim to educate 43 pupils on fully funded places by the Emanuel’s 430th anniversary in 2024.
